Self-ligating braces

This type of braces does not use steel or elastic ligatures and has a built-in mechanism that holds the wire in place with little friction while allowing it to slide freely back and forth.

Self-ligating brackets can be of two types— active self-ligating brackets use a sliding spring clip mechanism. They press against the archwire, applying an active force.

A passive self-ligating bracket has a door, which when closed, does not lead to any pressure on the archwire. At South Beach Clinic we use active self-ligating brackets.

Like with traditional braces, self-ligating braces require regular adjustments to straighten your teeth. Adjustments can change the force placed on your teeth, helping them move into the correct position. We can use longer intervals than traditional braces, reducing the number of appointments needed.

Who should get self-ligating braces?

Self-ligating braces can be an excellent choice for many orthodontic conditions. We can use them to treat most orthodontic complications. This includes patients with severe cases of overbites, underbites, crossbites, teeth with gaps, overcrowded teeth, crooked teeth and symptoms of sleep apnea.

Severe cases of jaw malocclusions or malalignment might not be eligible for this treatment because they may put too much pressure on the clips of your braces, causing them to break.

“I got braces with Dr Paul Murphy and from the very first appointment to the last appointment, with my braces now off. I couldn’t be happier with the experience through the journey and I am delighted with the results.”
